  • Who has been an inspiration in your life?

I’d like to dedicate my passion and drive for art to my parents. As a child, they allowed me the freedom to be creative and explore expressive outlets. I was homeschooled in 3rd grade and during this year, my mom didn’t know it at the time but she changed my life. She forced my siblings and I to make a painting at least once a week and little did she know how much impact this had on me. She even put us in a class to grow our portfolios and to grow and nourish our creativity. Throughout my childhood, my parents provided a space in my room with a desk and paint brushes, paint, etc. at the age of 10 and continued to allow this space to be anything I wanted. They even allowed me to draw on my walls, which in hindsight is the number one reason I found a passion for murals. As I started to get older, I needed space for my paintings and materials as my bedroom was no longer big enough to store everything I needed. In 10th grade, my dad opened up an empty space next to his business which was then used as my studio. I stayed in this studio for 3 years where I flourished and so did my business. I would not be where I am today without the creative freedom and love my parents gave me.

  • What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my drive and determination to beat all odds of becoming successful in a town where I was told no one would buy my art. My parents are the driving force of my success and continued to push me to make it out of that town to further grow my career. It was not easy but with their help of moral and financial support, I was able to save the money I made from my art to put it towards a tiny home on wheels to travel the country and bring my art to new communities. The biggest lesson I’ve learned traveling the country and making art is to establish a community of artists and like-minded creatives. Without a solid foundation, it is almost impossible to build anything on top of it.

  • What is your mural process?

My artistic process begins with an estimate based on measurements, expected labor, travel, insurance, supplies, design fee, and installation. A contract is then sent stating the terms between the parties. Through my design process, I inform the client to present reference photos of murals he/she admires/wants for their project. If the client does not have a clear vision for the mural, I ask questions, send mood boards, and a variety of color pallets to choose from. This information allows me to understand the client's expectations and creates clear communication between the artist and client. The design process is a 2-3 week wait period. I will send my ideas/designs as a pdf through an email. Changes/additions are more than welcome. After the design has been approved, I discuss any prep work needed, my availability, and what the client can expect from the artist. Installation begins with prep work, then I sketch using a projector or other methods, then apply exterior, weather, graffiti, and uv ray resistant paint. Upon completion, the mural is signed and approved by the client through a signed contract.

My name is Emma Gilbert, I am an oil painter and muralist born and raised in Alabama. I now travel the country in my shuttle bus conversion, AKA tiny home on wheels, painting murals and finding inspiration in new places and people. I began traveling in 2021 to challenge myself as a creative to discover new ideas and find inspiration. My goal is to experience different cultures of food, music, art and dancing. With my art, I hope to share my experiences through portraiture, hands, and nature. My color pallet normally consists of brown, pink, orange, yellow, black, and red. I work with warm tones as they express a feeling of comfort yet display incredible vibrancy. I have been an artist since birth, started selling art at twelve years old, and became a professional artist in 2020. I am passionate about painting and always excited to work on challenging projects!
